Gwyneth Paltrow personalises new Audi supercar to raise money for Elton John AIDS Foundation.

  • Audi RS 6 Avant sells for £120,000 at charity auction
  • Proceeds go entirely to support Elton John AIDS Foundation

A unique RS 6 Avant with a personalised interior autographed by the Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has sold at auction for £120,000 at the annual Elton John White Tie & Tiara Ball, held at the home of the singer / songwriter and his partner David Furnish. Every penny from the auction of the Audi supercar will go to support the work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

An impressive net total of £3m was raised by the Ball. Guests were invited to bid for the various lots, which included the one-off RS 6 Avant complete with a Lunar Silver leather interior immortalised by Paltrow's signature. The formidable super Avant is currently the most potent Audi available, producing 560PS and 700 Nm, a 0-62mph sprint time of just 3.9 seconds, and a top speed limited to 155mph, which can be raised upon request to 189mph.

Paltrow - who drives an Audi both in character as Pepper Potts in the Iron Man action series, and in real life on the roads of London and Los Angeles - put her stamp on the car earlier in the month by signing it at the model's launch at Audi City in Piccadilly, London. It had been the very first RS 6 Avant to arrive in the UK, ahead of general deliveries in August.

Stars at the White Tie & Tiara Ball included Coldplay, Uma Thurman, Freida Pinto, Elizabeth Hurley and David Walliams. "Audi is delighted to donate the unique RS 6 Avant for the equally unique White Tie & Tiara Ball. We are thrilled at the benefit it will give to Sir Elton's AIDS Foundation, which does such outstanding charity work, and very proud to be continued sponsors of the Ball," says Jon Zammett, Head for PR for Audi UK.

Sir Elton John adds: "I would like to extend my thanks to Audi for supporting the Elton John White Tie & Tiara Ball for the last 11 years, and for its generosity to the evening's fundraising."

The Elton John AIDS Foundation supports thousands of men, women and children with life-saving medicines, as well as offering information, nutrition, education, shelter and support. The Ball will help raise crucial funds to assist the Foundation in its ongoing battle against AIDS. The 2013 White Tie and Tiara Ball was the 15th ball in the event's history.

The multiple award winning Audi A4 was first launched in 1996 and is Audi’s compact executive car. Available in a large number of bodystyles, including Saloon, Avant, Cabriolet, the four-wheel-drive allroad quattro and the impressive 4.2 litre V8 RS 4.

The new generation A4 family entered showrooms in early 2012 and has been enhanced by significantly improved levels of CO2 emissions plus increased power and torque.

The previous A4 Saloon and Avant models were introduced in 2008, with the potent supercharged S4 added in 2009 and followed by the ‘go anywhere’ A4 allroad quattro in 2010. With its innovative fuel saving technologies, including recuperation and Start-Stop (on selected models) every A4 was efficient as it is powerful.

Prior to this, the 2004 model launch was marked out by the introduction of the single frame grill, distinguishing it from earlier models. A range of new engine technologies were also introduced at the time, including the 2.0 TFSI turbocharged and 3.2FSI V6 petrol engines and the powerful 3.0TDI V6 diesel engine.

The formidable RS 4, featuring a motorsport developed 4.2 litre V8 engine, was launched shortly after and offered in Saloon, Avant and Cabriolet bodystyles - a true performance car. With its wide range of bodystyles, engines, transmissions and the option of quattro permanent four wheel drive the Audi A4 offers something for everyone.

  • Best engine in 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category for fourth year in a row
  • Ninth category award win in a row for Audi TFSI technology
  • Rally-bred five-cylinder unit available in the TT RS, TT RS plus and forthcoming RS Q3 SUV

A jury of 87 leading motoring journalists from around the world has voted the Audi 2.5-litre TFSI unit the “International Engine of the Year” in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category for the fourth year running.

The first iteration of this legendary five-cylinder engine shocked the motorsport world with its formidable performance and unmistakable soundtrack, powering iconic cars such as the original Audi quattro and Sport quattro S1 which dominated rallying. Now its legacy continues in the TT RS Coupé and Roadster, featuring both turbocharging and FSI petrol direct injection, two core Audi technologies.

International Engine of the Year jury members said of the 2.5-litre engine: “The Audi TT RS is one of the most engaging smaller sports cars on the market. The sound and power of the throbbing, off-beat engine makes you feel like a Group B rally driver every time you get behind the wheel.”

The Audi TT RS plus Coupé and Roadster models have a displacement of 2,480 cc and a power output of 360 PS between 5,500 and 6,700 rpm. Peak torque is 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) between 1,650 and 5,400 rpm, enabling 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 4.1 seconds in the Coupé and 4.2 seconds in the Roadster. A 174mph top speed is possible in both where the law permits.

This is the ninth category win in a row at the International Engine of the Year Awards for Audi TFSI technology. Between 2005 and 2009, the Audi 2.0-litre TFSI engine won the award in the 1.8-litre to 2.0-litre category.

The 2.5-litre TFSI unit will also provide power for the RS Q3, the first RS model in the successful Audi SUV line-up. In the RS Q3 it produces 310PS and delivers fuel economy of up to 32.1mpg on a combined cycle, thanks in part to a Start-Stop system and a regulated oil pump that only supplies lubricant when needed. This frugality is of course complemented by typical RS intensity - the RS Q3 takes just 5.5 seconds to complete the sprint from 0 to 62mph and its top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.
